Thanatos is a powerful knight who defeated Surt and sealed the jotunn beneath the Morroc castle. (In the English release of the manhwa, Thanatos' name was mistranslated as Tanat.)

Abilities

Thanatos is blessed with great strength to be able to take on Surt by himself. He is apparently knowledgable about some magic in order to seal Surt away.

600 years prior to the Age of Man, Thanatos took on Surt and his legion of fire demons all by himself. The battle raged for 10 days and nights, the force of which split the heavens and the earth. On the last day, Thanatos manages to defeat Surt and seal him into the earth, upon which a shrine was built to maintain the seal on Surt.

Thanatos disappeared soon after and was never heard from again.

Other Appearances

In the game Ragnarok Online, players are able to enter a dungeon known as Thanatos Tower. Aside from scarce historical documentation and spoken legends, very little is known about Thanatos Tower and why it was built. Thanatos' ghost resides at the top of the tower.

• In Greek mythology, Thanatos was the daemon personification of death. He was a minor figure in Greek mythology, often referred to but rarely appearing in person.
